The drastic water regime in Omurtag

For at least three generations the Omurtag people have been told the same lie – “There is no water.” And they believed it because there had been no one around to tell them otherwise.

Local media are weak or non-existent. National media are Sofia-centric and suppressed to the point of irrelevance. The region is traditionally controlled by the Rights and Freedoms Movement – the party we all know as De-Pe-Se. Local politicians have been using the water regime as a weapon against their own constituents.

It took one person to start breaking through the lies. Local activist Magdalena Slavova started pushing the local water company for information. She created a Viber group to help her fellow citizens find out when to start filling their water bottles. Because under the old water regime water would come to random areas at random hours. And that was considered “normal”.
