On floods – beyond populism

The causes of tragedies are much deeper than corruption

2 France, 1 Ireland, 66 Mexico. The numbers are tragic—the victims of floods and storms recorded alongside the horror in the Bulgarian resort of Elenite. Only a fraction of what has happened around the world.

263 Valencia, Spain, 5 United Kingdom in 2024. 17 Greece, 8 Turkey, 4 Bulgaria together in 2023. All of these are again victims of a single event, a single cataclysm. A small part of them.

There is something flawed in the Bulgarian analysis of the causes of the disasters. It looks only at our own and collectively judges domestic corruption and lawlessness as the cause – “there is no state!” It is debatable whether there is a state, but if that were the main reason, the numbers would not be similar around the world. 263 victims in Valencia in just one flood! The Spanish should never have lived in a state.
