Bilateral relations have collapsed to their lowest point in more than a decade
The border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand over the Emerald Triangle, the temples of “Ta Muon Thom”, “Ta Muen Touch”, and “Ta Kwae” before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) have escalated into a serious military conflict. Let us hope that this does not give China a reason to intervene.
The fighting is an escalation of the dispute between the two Southeast Asian neighbors, which dates back more than a century. Thailand closed its border with Cambodia, and Cambodia worsened its relations with Thailand, accusing its military of using “excessive force.” Both countries are evacuating their citizens from the border areas, the BBC reported, adding that more than 12 people have been killed and many wounded.
The two countries exchanged fire early on Thursday, with each claiming that the other had provoked the conflict. It quickly escalated, with Thailand accusing Cambodia of firing rockets and Bangkok launching air strikes on Cambodian military targets.
