Irina Manusheva: Our education system is in a severe, systemic, long-standing crisis

It costs us billions as taxpayers, it costs thousands per year for each family

Today, at 7 p.m., in front of the Bulgarian National Bank, another protest will be held under the slogan “For real education!” with demands for targeted and visionary educational reform that will lead us into the future; against the adoption of the bill amending and supplementing the Pre-school and School Education Act (PSEA) and the planned piecemeal changes to it in its current form. On the occasion of the protest and the start of the school year, we talk to Irina Manusheva.

Irina Manusheva is a translator of fiction, humanities, and popular science literature, a master’s degree holder in philosophy, and a former teacher. She is a long-time advocate for free and quality education. She is a mother of three children.

Poor education costs us all dearly. It costs us billions as taxpayers, it costs thousands a year to every family wondering how to set aside money to compensate for the system’s shortcomings, it costs us hundreds of billions in missed opportunities for economic growth. It costs us quality of life. It literally costs us lives.
