Pakistan’s entrepreneurial ecosystem hooked on command respiration for China

Pakistan is the world’s fifth-most populous country

Though the technology collaboration between Pakistan and China is still in its early days1, its potential impact is significant. It opens a channel for exchanging emerging tech and business models. In 2018, Alibaba Group acquired Daraz Group, the largest e-commerce platform in Pakistan, setting a precedent for future collaboration. More recently, Temu launched in Pakistan in October 2024 and is rapidly gaining popularity, signalling strong potential for further Chinese involvement.

Despite its challenges, Pakistan’s start-up ecosystem is on the cusp of becoming one of the most significant in the world. The groundwork has been laid for disruptive innovation in areas such as fintech and e-commerce. China and Pakistan already enjoy a strong relationship built over decades of diplomatic relations. As the two lay the foundation for future growth and prosperity, Pakistan’s tech ecosystem can play a significant role.
