Sofia: relics of ruins, relics of government

Sofia: relics of ruins, relics of government

Restorations without memory, pavements without direction, management without vision

The relics you see are from a Roman city that had an amazing water supply network,” a tour guide told a group of foreigners in the Ancient Serdica complex. I’m just passing but at that moment I listen… and look. You could call it a Bulgarian tradition to understand our lives through the eyes of foreigners. I look up at what they’re seeing.

In the heart of our city, where we should be celebrating our multi-layered and diverse history, the first thing we see at eye level are the falling facade tiles from the archaeological site. Behind them – an ugly peeling wall with a shabby ad for lollipops. It’s staring at the historical misunderstanding that is the Central Department Store whose ownership and management have fallen hostage to the complex corruption schemes in the government of our country.
