Openly power is exercised in violence against citizens
In Bulgaria, from unregulated phone records, to illegal arrests, trumped-up charges, control of social media accounts, fake content, politicized media, and more.
What we are witnessing in real time is the growing capacity of a very small group of people to use the power and technology they own and control to impose their anti-democratic views of how society and the economy are organised on others.
“Techno-fascism” describes a form of authoritarianism driven by technocrats, where technology is seen as the primary force in shaping society and the state. It involves a fusion of public and private spheres, with a strong emphasis on technological development and control, often accompanied by suppression of dissent and a focus on national interests. This concept emerged from studies of Japanese state planning during World War II, where technocrats played a key role in mobilizing resources and shaping national policy.
