Savka founded the first silk factory in Vratsa at the age of 18

Savka Purpova is officially the first Bulgarian woman entrepreneur. In 1903, when she was only 18 years old, she founded the first silk factory in Vratsa. She started with one textile loom and grew to a million share company with 120 employees. In the same year, together with the founding of Savka’s factory, the first silk weaving school and silk cloth weaving mill in Bulgaria was established in Vratsa.

Later, the company grew and bought the most modern machines for its time. A testimonial from the era says of it, “They offered fine satins, silks, bariches and jacquards, neckties, scarves, crepes de chine, soe ecru, pongee and other fabrics unknown today to the generations of the era of artificial fabrics.
