The political climate in Bulgaria

A repressive wind and prevailing unsustainable weather, elections are possible

It’s hot outside, but the temperature of Bulgarian political life is below zero. We can confidently say that the negative trends will continue for some time to come. After Delyan Peevski’s New Beginnings party swallowed the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, morsel by morsel, now there have been repressive attacks against municipal mayors of the opposition parties. There is a clear analogy with the fast track arrest and serious indictment against Desislava Ivancheva, also an opposition party mayor. There is clear participation of the ruling GERB party in the vengeful weather forecast. The leader, Boyko Borissov, is losing not only his temper, but also his control.

The outcome of the latest attack on Bulgarian democracy, which hung the young doctors, students, and opposition out to dry, and cemented the prosecutor’s office is as yet not clear. But it has increased the pressure of arrogance and insolence of the government once again.

It is important to clarify that the damage (hail, torrent and flood) on the right is not only due to the internal governance of PP or pressure from GERB and “New Beginning” from the outside, or only because of the high requirements for integrity, transparency, accountability of the Bulgarian intelligentsia, but is also due to the lack of a mature mechanism for combating behind-the-scenes intrigue, as well as the Mafia and the politicians who represent it in Bulgaria.
