Waste Reuse in Action
Discarded tires present more than just a spatial or visual problem. They are a significant environmental burden. When accumulated in open spaces, used tires create conditions ripe for spontaneous combustion, and in many cases are deliberately set on fire to clear space or extract metals. Tire fires are among the most difficult to contain—burning tires release dense black smoke filled with fine particulate matter, dioxins, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals. Incidents in the United States, Mexico, and Spain have shown that such fires can burn for weeks, causing long-term damage to air, soil, and groundwater quality. Moreover, tires trap rainwater, making them ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease-carrying pests.
In this context, tire recycling gains very tangible relevance. One of the most effective and sustainable reuse methods is the transformation of tires into noise-insulating panels for roadside, rail, and industrial noise barriers.
