A political prisoner from detention

A political prisoner from detention

Blagomir Kotsev`s letter

We publish the author’s text without abridgement.

Blagomir Kotsov is a Bulgarian economist, entrepreneur, and politician. He was the 50th democratically elected mayor of Varna from November 13, 2023. He has been in permanent detention since July 8, 2025.

I will not betray the people of Varna, just as I did not betray them under pressure to have my picture taken under the coat of arms in a deputy’s office in the National Assembly. There was such pressure, but I will talk about that another time.

Yesterday, once again, the prosecutor’s office and the court kept me in custody, mainly because I’m mayor and could influence the investigation. My response was, “If that’s how they see it, let the prosecutor’s office ask for my removal, but let them release me to my family.”

I stated that until the end of October, when my leave expires, I have no intention or desire to return to the municipality, so the CPC can calmly conduct its investigation.

But if they expect me to resign from my post and leave, that will not happen. Let the prosecutor’s office remove me and then let the people of Varna say what they think about it in early elections.

If the fight against corruption, monopolies, Plamenka, and accusations that put people in jail on the basis of “One Woman Said So” requires a new election victory, let’s achieve it together with the free people of Varna!
