Bulgarian passions in the Holy Week

Days for spiritual vigilance

The Great Days of Holy Week (from Palm Sunday to Easter) are a time for deep meaning and respect. They are filled with a number of prohibitions and for each one there is a different custom and tradition. Of course there is also symbolic meaning. Most Bulgarians won’t step foot on the church doorstep on either day, or stop fun and work to wallow in thoughts of suffering, but they love colourful eggs on Thursday or Saturday and look forward not to the Resurrection but to the “kozunatsi” on Sunday.

Today, the Great Tuesday, is just the day for humility and reconciliation. But can we come to terms with the reality in Bulgaria and be humble and reconciled in the landscape of corruption, lawlessness and the universal destruction of values?

In between the liturgies, the seditious tropes, the parables and the prayerful chants of the church, which will try once again to smother civic consciousness, protest, just demands and dissent from what is happening in our country, it is important to continue to think about what is happening in education.
