Academics warn that decline in reading hinders learning


If you ask contemporary teachers what the biggest educational change of the decade has been, it is almost certain that the change in news consumption, “scrolling,” instant content at the click of a button, and the lack of engagement with longer texts have limited the comprehension of today’s students. According to PISA tests, the level of critical reading, interpretive skills, and the key skill of “reading comprehension” in Bulgarian schools is critically low and has led to widespread functional illiteracy.


We are facing an alarming challenge. Teachers will once again stand in front of students in the same old classrooms, with the same old textbooks, teaching the same old curricula in a world that has been turned upside down.
