Sadness, indignation, embarrassment and fear
Rona lives in a family with three brothers and three sisters. Her father is an alcoholic and a gambling addict. Her mother works and everything she earns, her father wastes. The family is hungry and gradually the brothers fled abroad, her two sisters were sold for debts for an early marriage, and she remains unmarried. She is a talented violin player. She has studied until the 5th grade at a school where she has friends. In 5th grade, she disappears. Her classmates and teachers ask around to find out what might have happened. They can’t find the family. They finally learn the truth – Rona has been given away to an arranged marriage, she is forbidden to play and go to school. She lives with her new husband and his family. She is also forbidden to leave the house, has no phone and has no right to communicate with outsiders. There is no trace of the cheerful and lively girl: just sad eyes, a frail body and quiet voice explaining to the social workers that everything is at her request and with her consent – that’s what we do, she says.
