There have been harder times, but none dirtier
Last night1 until after midnight, I was at the Courts of Justice in Sofia, to see whether the court would revoke the “custody” warrant against Blagomir Kotsev, Mayor of Varna. He had been charged with “reasonable suspicion” of participation in an Organised Criminal Group and Money Laundering. Here, I will share some of my impressions while trying to be objective. Why on earth did I go there, you may ask?
As an ordinary Bulgarian citizen, I wanted to see for myself how the judicial system works, and how reliable it is. The whole of Bulgaria saw the televised testimony of a lady, whose face I will not comment on, but will not forget. I wanted to know whether such testimony can form the basis for vilifying someone before his family, the city, the state, and the world.
Also as a writer, I wanted to see if my anxieties and fears about what was happening in Bulgaria were justified, if my sense of creeping dictatorship had anything to do with reality.
