Before religious studies, the alignment of the planets was a favourite topic amongst Bulgarian politicians
An hour before the event, due to the huge public interest and tumultuous reaction – the planets were realigned and the Ministry of Education changed its description… to a “round table” event. Now everyone would be able to speak and some of the non-governmental organiations and civil society activists who responded to the 150 invitations were announced. They included representatives of the Parents Association, Teach for Bulgaria, the Institute for Research in Education, Open Society, and others, as well as active citizens and parents, including those with a critical opinion on the topic, such as Mrs. Irina Manusheva, Mrs. Maria Peeva and others. Nevertheless… 1/3 of school pupils in Bulgaria are obese, 1/3 of the schools do not have a gym. 54% of school pupils are functionally illiterate. Now the entire country is arguing about whether there should be religious education in school? Are we going to leave the serious problems until we get a sign of the Second Coming?
