In Bulgaria power does not deter
Today a panel of the Sofia Court of Appeals will decide whether to release Varna Mayor Blagomir Kotsev from custody after yesterday the main witness for the prosecution, Dian Ivanov, recanted his testimony, saying it was given under pressure.
Opposition parties and civic organisations gathered in several Bulgarian cities yesterday to protest against prosecutorial arbitrariness and the takeover of the judiciary, insisting that after 21 July neither Borislav Sarafov (Acting Prosecutor General) nor Georgi Cholakov (President of the Supreme Administrative Court) are legally entitled to continue in office and that to do so would be a flagrant violation of the law.
