Two-time gold medalist with maximum score, husband, father and civic activist
Dan ran as an independent candidate in Romania’s 2025 presidential elections and received 20.9% of the vote in the first round. In the second round on 18 May, he faced the founder of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), George Simion. Dan’s hard-line pro-Western platform contrasted with his opponent’s nationalist and Eurosceptic stance. In the second round he won with 53.60% of the vote.
In his victory speech, the 55-year-old Dan called the result “a moment of hope”. “Today’s election was won by a community of Romanians who want deep change in Romania.”
