Is it time for a Ministry of Old Age?
There is widespread fear that an ageing population will have a negative impact on overall economic growth. But studies that draw attention to how economies can reap strong competitive advantages if they ensure that progress in the functional capacity to age well and work into later old age increases are highly optimistic and offset these fears. Moreover, improvements in the capacity of the elderly population – not to be a burden on the young and on the system, increased life expectancy, the creation of entire industries with employment primarily for seniors – is a gold mine for economic growth.
